For many people June represents the start of summer. Children have been dreaming about this day for weeks. School is ending for students and June represents FREEDOM from homework, early alarm clocks, and sitting in a classroom waiting for the clock to hit 3pm.
National Dare Day
It is fitting that the first day of June is National Dare Day. Remember the game Truth or Dare? How many of you choose dare? Remember when we were kids and you used to Double Dog Dare your friends to do something silly?
Or how about the classic movie “A Christmas Story” from 1983 where Schwartz TRIPLE dog dares Flick to lick the frozen flag pole.
Flick: Are you kidding? Stick my tongue to that stupid pole? That’s dumb!
Schwartz: That’s ’cause you know it’ll stick!
Flick: You’re full of it!
Schwartz: Oh yeah?
Schwartz: Well I double-DOG-dare ya!
Ralphie as adult: NOW it was serious. A double-dog-dare. What else was there but a “triple dare you”? And then, the coup de grace of all dares, the sinister triple-dog-dare.
Schwartz: I TRIPLE-dog-dare ya!
Poor Flick was stuck on that frozen flag pole until the teacher came out to get him. I swear this is one of my favorite Christmas movies that I MUST watch every year. I can’t wait till my children are old enough, so we can snuggle up on the couch, with the fireplace blazing, and watch this great classic movie.
But back to National Dare Day
Dares can take on all shapes and sizes. Maybe you dare a friend to do a silly safe prank. How about having the courage to start that personal goal or dream? June is a great month to get in shape and look amazing in your beach wear! Challenges are the perfect solution to stretch ourselves outside of our comfort zone. We all need to be stretched once in a while to grow. What better time than the start of a new month and on national dare day, encouraging you to take action.
What are you going to challenge yourself to start or do today and through this month?
My biggest challenge, an ambition of mine, is starting my blog. I’m taking a risk and stepping so far out of comfort zone and trying not to stop and look back. Starting something new is difficult and sometimes scary especially when the dream involves your emotions. But there’s no better day than today to start your dreams! I’d rather wake up years from now knowing I had the ambition to try everything on my bucket list, than wonder what could have been.
They always say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Sometimes I feel there is truth to that statement. But not today! I feel that any trick or trade can be learned. Just at a slower pace and with lots of patience.
Patience is a requirement for learning anything new. Followed by repetition to bring perfection. How many times will my baby fall down trying to walk? Then one day I turn around and she is walking. With walking checked off her goal list, she will move on to running. Of course there will be lots of bumps along the way.
If Babies Don’t Give Up Neither Should We
Right now I’m teaching myself the technical aspects of a blog. This is a very harsh language barrier since I don’t speak computer! I know my site isn’t perfect. I’ve become frustrated over and over again learning the different angles of the program. With patience, Alas, I find a solution to one tiny question. Creating a victory and the drive to continue tomorrow. Slowly I’m accomplishing my dreams and goals as I plunge on this huge challenge.
Victory will be mine for the taking!
Don’t we all want to say that? We can, starting today with the ambition to step out of our comfort zone, grow ourselves and take that baby step towards our dreams.
What dare did you accomplish to stretch yourself today?
